Perhaps his softer image is made to cater the older/mature demographics (I hear that he is really huge with the older generations in Japan and Korea).
Yes, I guess actors have to do these things. I could be considered an "older lady" too though I prefer manly style (but I love his long hair). But snooping around Korean forums and blogs I notice that they have a whole big issue with ajumamas (old ladies) . I don't notice such discrimination against us (:D) in the Western media. Over-30 ladies are usually prime audience here..
This and the "small face" beauty standard really puzzle me.
