I love Andersen's works, too, and this story is so sad ... it always made me cry, if only by imagining how might one feel while having a shard of that wicked mirror planted in his/her heart!
This story is very deep, but it always was the happy ending story for me. I can't say the same for the original Andersen's "Little mermaid".
