Holidays!!!!!!!!! I hope all of you are having a wonderful time. And all my best wishes to anyone having a hard time!!! ** Hugs **
Alexandra's holiday sitrep:
- Successful Roasts - 2. A Lamb Roast with Jamie Oliver Rosemary and Lavender seasoning was particular delicious and Mr.Alexander roasted some scrumptious potatoes and parsnips. I am mad about parsnips.
- Chocolates, mince pies, cakes of various kind, ice creams, etc. YUMM!
- Having walks in the park as "a family with two dogs" . Our friend's chocolate labrador Borbon is on holidays in our house.
- Resting together doing nothing and watching TV. "Tops of the Pops", "Doctor Who", the works. Doctor Who was great - being a little more serious suits David Tennant much better. And Donna is such a love!!!
- Watching Asian dramas as they are suitable when having children around. "The Snow Queen" is my latest dorama love, I have posted more about it Here in
dorama_chat. And Japanese drama"Remote" is awesome too. I like it even more then "Kurosagi", I think!!!
- Watching films late at night and sleeping until at least 10.00. I have watched "Layer cake" (visually stunning, great ending, Daniel Craig's blue eyes, some good twists), "Children of Men" (great and great and even more great when I start thinking about it, I must make a proper post about this film with pictures), "The Island" (OK, but nothing to write home about, Sean Bean is the best thing about it for me).
- Going to the sales "with girls". Buying shooooooooooooooes.

This is one of the best things about holidays. ;) I love the sense of immersion that comes with watching film after film. I did a re-watch of "Batman Begins" yesterday, and I do love that movie so. There is Christian Bale of coures, but there is also this debate about myths - and the strength that can be contained in a myth or a symbol. I love that.
And "Layer Cake"! It is visually stunning and very clever. The ending caught me by surprise though, but I gues that is a good thing. I have never seen The Island, not even the power of Bean compelled me. Mostly because of all the promo in advance of the film. By the time it was out I felt like I had seen it already. Alas for too much pre-exposure I guess. :(

Date: 2006-12-27 12:58 pm (UTC)I saw 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' for the first time last night. As you probably know Michael Gambon plays Albus Dumbledore in that one. I've also only recently seen 'Layer Cake' for the first time. So when I hear Gambon's voice last night again I totally hear him say 'Welcome to the layer cake son'. Which seems slightly out-of-place in a HP movie. :D
I enjoyed 'Layer Cake' very much and was very disappointed that it was never shown here at the theatre. So I had to buy the DVD. On the commentary track the director says about one particular scene (tongue-in-cheek) that he thinks Craig auditions here for the role of James Bond. That was way before it actually happened.
I thought the ending was a little bit too abrupt. Did you watch it on TV or from DVD? Did you have a look at the alternative endings?

They are less shiny in RL, photography makes them look slightly different. They are more like leather with the fake snake skin pattern. :D

I could not resist, when I see interesting shoes I am done for. They were very much reduced, though :D

Date: 2006-12-27 06:51 pm (UTC)I wear high heels quite often, and the steady ones like the ones on the new "snake skin" shoes usually don't give me a problem. But cobbled streets - this sounds so cosy and so from the last century, I love cobbled streets.
There is Christian Bale of coures, but there is also this debate about myths - and the strength that can be contained in a myth or a symbol. I love that.
Now I fee l I must re-watch this too. :D
The ending caught me by surprise though, but I guess that is a good thing.
Though "Layer Cake" was quite exceptional cinematography-wise, but it didn't offer me much of a surprise until the ending. It was going pretty much the way "Snatch" and "Lock, Stock and Two Smocking Barrels" gone. But because ending was so unexpected and somehow reminiscent of "God Father" I really quite liked the film overall.
As for "The Island", I only got it because it is so much cheaper to get 3 films at once in our rental shop. But Sean Bean in cool glasses was rather gooood, and so was Ewan McGregor speaking with his Scottish accent, so it wasn't much of a loss. I quite liked the discussion on clone ethics too. :D

I thought the ending was a little bit too abrupt. Did you watch it on TV or from DVD? Did you have a look at the alternative endings?
I loved the ending. Even though film was made that every single frame is stunning and it was clever to the bargain, it is very much like "Snatch" and "Lock, Stock and Two Smocking Barrels". I don't say it is a bad thing because I love both of these films, but that just was my feeling. I read that Guy Ritchie was supposed to make "Layer Cake" too.
But the fact that the ending had two very interesting twists (and the second one I totally didn't see coming) made "LAyer Cake" much more interesting for me. And also the ending was reminiscent of "God Father", I thought this was cool.
Did you watch it on TV or from DVD? Did you have a look at the alternative endings?
I watched a DVD but didn't have a chance to look at the alternative endings. But I have heard that "LAyer Cake" was supposed to have a "happy" ending, but Matthew Vaughn prepared the different one. :D

The only thing - Rain's outfits (especially in the first half of drama) make me giggle like silly. :D

Date: 2006-12-28 11:42 am (UTC)What I am confused about is that ladies fashions seems to be always top-notch. "Full House" is 4 years old, but "Goong" and "My Girl" are this year's dramas and I could just steal all the ladies outfits so good they are.
