And it is very interesting because Sabriel had a cat (or what looked like a cat) and this creature was the key to the success. And now Lirael has a talking Dog who is also a GIRL-DOD!!
And also that she's kind of confused about her place in the world and not instantaneously good at everything!
Aww - I have cried when I was reading about the Lirael's birthday!!! And it was wonderful to see how everything could change so quickly! And yes - one of the things I like so much in Nix's books that Lirael and Sabriel don't seem to be super-girls at the beginning, that we see how they mature and learn and it feels so right! And also that they now particular butt-kicking or stroppy (which always made me a little cringe in Lyra). They just "normal" girls with the special destiny!
