All about Josef

I am still thinking about episode 1.09 "Fleur de Lis" . My initial reactions were quite muddled but after "sleeping on it" I am slightly disappointed and angry with Mick. Oh Mick, please make up you mind!!! Mick seems to be hung up on Coraline whilst having a thing for Beth too. The Mick/Coraline scene in a shower was a classical Dostoevsky-like double-thoughts and double-intents extravaganza. Mick (being crazily attracted to Coraline on one hand) stepped into that shower with the additional purpose of finding out more about her. And when he found out that she was CORALINE he was happy that he didn't kill his BIG LOVE but at the same time he was very much interested in finding out how she became a human. At the moment Mick is The Mister Confused. And I am confused with him. :D

But my personal highlights of the episode were the scene between Josef and Beth and the moment when Beth stabbed Coraline. HEE! I have to admire Beth's focus and drive! She is so much not a double-intents girl and this totally rocks. It is not as if I advocate stabbing but.. And Beth and Josef? Talking about Josef's feelings under pretence of talking about Mick's feelings??? This is like a big beautiful chocolate cake for my torn soul. :D



Let's talk about Josef! My favourite secondary character at the moment and hunky Logan in the past!! This character study is dedicated to petzipellepingo (who gave me the idea a couple of weeks ago).

Occupation: Something to do with making wagons of money. Unclear.
Update: According to CBS (2007) Josef is "hedge fund trader".

Character: Ruthless and free from moral scruples but loyal to his friends. Fully embraced his "inner vampire" (Konstantin (2007))

I LOVE this post. lovelove. Between you and transtempts, my Josef-demon is being well-fed this week. :)

Josef's current occupation is "hedge fund trader", according to the CBS site (http://alpha.cbs.com/primetime/moonlight/about.shtml). (There's quite an interesting little article at Slate about Hollywood's sudden interest in the finance world here (http://www.slate.com/id/2174790/).) And in fact, I think orange_crushed and I have talked about how unusual it is for Josef to be working out of California, when most of the hedge fund management is done in New York and Connecticut.

About Josef's taste in art - those wall friezes reminded me of Soviet Bloc propagandist art, or Diego Rivera's Cubist murals. Not gothic so much as...uber macho? His apartment/office is definitely quite an intimidating sort of space. I also loved the painting on his ceiling - don't think we've seen that before. Bombs, planes, a cityscape, and a cloaked woman on a bridge. I'm not sure what it means, but the anachronism of modern jets with that female figure who looks like she's just stepped out of a fairy tale is very interesting. For me, his rooms have a certain style that supports the Central European background his name points to.

I predict that we will discover in the next few episodes that Josef has a romantic history with Coraline that Mick may or may not be aware of. His expression when Beth said, "I watched her burn" was so unexpectedly sad, and his comments to Beth in that episode ("Coraline was a lot of things to a lot of people...most of them men") all seem to be pointing towards him knowing her more intimately that Mick seems to think.

In summation: Josef > everybody. And there needs to be more Josef/Beth.

I think he was to some extent double-agenty. More I think about this more it worries me, actually. It is as if he was playing on Coraline's feelings but at the same time his own feelings were in a mess. So very wrong. Whatever Coraline is (an insane person IMHO) is she hasn't deserved this, no one has. And at the same time he is sort of betraying himself into thinking he is just doing it because of double-agenty things..

It is very un-Christian for me but I am so glad Beth did the stabbing. :D

Josef has the best phrases in the history. THEY MUST BE PUBLISHED. :D And I miss Mick's voiceovers so much. There must be some reason why they switched them to Beth's voiceovers. May be because Mick is in total confusion now..

Your two favorite parts of the episode are the same as mine.

Oh yeah, Josef buys and sells stocks. That's how he makes all his money. I was thinking he was into commodities, but after Friday night's ep it looks like it's stocks or perhaps funds. Hm.

edit: Ah, I was just reading someone elses entry here and she said he's a "hedge fund trader". Interesting. It would make sense for him to live on the Pacific Coast because he is up at night. At least for part of the time the market is open.

I indeed could. :D I am giving him some credit – he didn' tbelieve Morgan was Coraline so everything was unexpected for him, BUT I WILL NOT tolerate his behaviour for too long. :D

You had me giggling aloud this morning when I read the post at work. Good thing I was all by my lonesome.

For a character I was quite lukewarm to beging with, Josef has really grown on me. He's funny in a dry way and nicely snarky. There's no pretence in Josef, in a sense that he's comfortable in being who/what he is. It's good to have an angsfree one amongst the mix. ;P I've read some of the spoilers for the upcoming episodes so I'm pretty sure I know where his soft looks and remarks to Beth come from. We'll learn about that in the next epi.

As for this episode. A mindfrack if there ever was one. I LIKED Morgan/Coraline in this episode and at the same time knew she was just playing her eternal mindgames. Everything she ever does is totally staged. Beth stabbing her was probably not in the gameplan though, ha.

There's a lot of history bitween Coraline and Mick so it was not a big surprise that he was drawn to her again. He'll have to deal with that part of his life before there's any hope of him being able to move on. Some people never fully recover from a relationship as destructive as their's has been. Coraline obviously has no intention of letting him go scotfree either. There were reasons she picked Mick in the first place (more spoilers, ha).

As for why Coraline choose Beth. Well, I think well find out that Beth is related to her. Maybe a direct decendant....

I was afraid for her sanity.. I think I could have liked Coraline more if she didn't feel so insane. But it is always interesting to see someone so clever!
I am starting to think that Beth's stabbing was a part of the plan and that Coraline wants to become a vampire again, like Darla. Stabbing = Mick is feeling sorry = Mick makes Coraline a vamp. Why otherwise Coraline left her Hollywood house the way it used to be? For Beth to see?

Or, like in nutmeg3's theory: Coraline wants to make Mick pay for her "death". She doesn't want him back. She wants a revenge..

My initial feeling was similar to your but I was completely "changed" in the middle of the season 1 of VM. At the beginning I didn't even think JD is good looking but at the end of the season 1 I was a rabid fan. :D I think for me it was more of a personality thing.

Similar to Logan, it took me a while to fall fully in love with Josef but NOW I agree to every word that you are saying. :D For me it all hinges on the possibility (or no possibility) for the show to develop into more seasons. I think when the creators have more time they will develop Josef's story more.

The bas-relief statuary Looks like Heroic Depression Era stuff to me, but maybe it's Abyssinian. ;)

Hmm, I haven't noticed at first but you are right. The construction of the windows in his office is a strange one (similar to what we often see in conservatories). It could make his desk a very light spot but light with in-direct sunlight. Or may be vampires are only sensitive to ultraviolet rays and they get filtered by glass?
