But don't take the original film away from fans who had spent ten years loving that version.

I agree absolutely. But this seems to be a problem with directors doing a "final cut" or "final version". Suddenly you have a Star Wars where Han Solo does not shoot first, and a lot of confused viewers that feel cheated of the story they are used to seeing. I think a lot of directors forget that once a film is released it takes on a life of its own.

Also when a film is as visually coherent as LOTM (I would argue that half of that film's strength comes from the stunning cinematography and filming), altering this visual flow can have drastic effects on the way the viewer, well, views the movie.

But sometimes an alternate version can be a good thing. I couldn't stand Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven" in it's cinematic release form, but the Director's Version is actually not that bad.

The film version was perfect for where and how it was used, imo. (I'm such a geek for this movie!;P)

Hee. That makes two of us. And Clannad film version is perfect. It has always annoyed me a little that the film version is impossible to get a hold of. Thankfully my DVD comes with a "soundtrack only" option that allows me to play the film as if it was (almost) a music cd.

Oh and your icon is breathtaking.
