Hong Gil Dong (or Korean Robin Hood)

I have watched 5 episodes of this 24-episode Korean drama already and it is really enjoyable. Not earth-shattering or outstanding but very, very well done. It seems that Korean dramas of the last two years gathered in speed and quality and this is just another very good product indeed. Fast, tight, great story, bright colours and very amusing. Oh, and good music. The story of Robin Hood is good everywhere, isn't it?

Few things to mention:

- Please don't kill me – I am not finding Kang Ji Hwan (the actor who plays Hong Gil Dong) attractive yet. I am saying "yet" as may be he will grow on me (and I really like the character) but for now he is somehow a tad too fat or something.

- I definitely don't quite like Heo Lee Nok (or Yi Nok?). And this must be the character as Sung Yu Ri was wonderful in "Winter Queen". I just wish Heo Lee Nok will stop making over-eggagerated facial expressions. And I have grown tired of "a stupid girl with a heart of gold who eats too much and with whom everyone falls in love" cliche . She doesn't bother me but at the same time she doesn't amuse me at all.

- So here (apart of the story which is very interesting to watch) I am all about The Black Prince. I think I will end up with my heart broken!!

- The last part of the usual quadrangle, Seo Eun Hye (played by Kim Ri Na) , seems to be a psycho spoiled girl. The first scene with her (the one with a dead bird) was very seriously creepy.

Just a nice screencap: The Black Prince vs Hong Gil Dong

The hairdo from hell doesn't help (soompiers referred to it as'adjumma perm' LOL)

lol. It definitely makes his face look broader.

I have a theory that his hairdo mirrors his heroic progression. The more heroic he gets, the straighter his hair. Ergo, in the beginning before flashback, he has that awesome super straight hair :)

Maybe they didn't want to make him too good-looking when he is a layabout? :)

Hee! Doing it in a manner of Dao Ming Si and his MOST HORRIBLE HAIR OF ALL TIMES? Yep, true love and a drop of heroism can make anyone's hair go right. :D

Yep, true love and a drop of heroism can make anyone's hair go right. :D

Hmm... How does that explain my hair? LOL. I suppose though my love is true (unrequited though it is), I am not heroic in the least. *Cries*

** good hair wishes ** My hair are never quite right too. It is fortunate that we don't live in kdrama. :D

Yup, that hair is equally atrocious. And they don't even have the manga excuse this time.

I spoiled myself for some future eps and his hair seems to be getting worse. ** OMPH ** But I do like love HGD now. But I also love the Prince, may be even more than HGD. Just so pure unconditionally forever. I really hope that this is not going the way to make HGD a king, but more I watch of this it seems more possible.

I don't think any viewer of period kdrama (even a fusion one) could accept a nonroyal character becoming a King. Also, he doesn't become king of this kingdom in the original story (I hope that's not too much of a spoiler).

I am currently annoyed at the Prince for spoilery reasons (political not romantic. They've been good with writing love triangle well so far). He does have pretty hair though!

That what I would think too. But they continue to show how the Prince's organization is doing many terrible things and obviously, the Prince is responsible too. There is no way that in dorama they will make an unworthy person to be the new king. Who then going to be the king but HGD?

I really hope the Prince will stop being "I have a high purpose and for this purpose I'll murder my people". This doesn't stop me from loving him, though. I sometimes get attached to conflicted and not-stellar-conscience heroes. For me the prince's upbringing (you are the only hope and avenger and you are SPECIAL) to blame for everything. I really hope he'll shake this.

Well, as per wiki, at least, in the original 17th century novel, the point was that past a certain point there was nothing you could do to make those in power good. There was going to be a base level of badness there.

But I dunno, I think Prince is learning, at least. I have hopes for him.

I have heard this on soompi too, that the prince may become a king but will be evil. OHHHHHHHHH! I am going to have my heart broken!! Why do I like a secondary character who has all chances to become evil so much????????????

Well, look at it this way: we both liked Ho Gae and he did a lot worse things :)

Seriously though, I have hope for the Prince.

** ckutches your hand ** I will hope too! :D I just wish I could spoil myself for the ending. :D At least with Ho Gae I knew what is coming.
